Interestingly, my perspective of being a pet sitter has changed. it’s moulded from experience and conversations. Before we begin, my perspective was never a negative one, I’ve just learnt more things. Here is my list of 6 things I’ve learnt as a pet sitter 1 year on:
Not every client is right for you and vice versa. This is always a tough pill to swallow but luckily, I’ve only had to decline a couple of clients within my first year and it’s always with the client’s best interest in mind. My benchmark is that if I feel like I couldn’t keep a pet safe under my care than that pet is not right for me.
Always remember when you leave the key and keep it the same place each time. It’s a simple one but it can cause some stress if you’ve changed your routine and you can’t remember where their house key has gone (this might just be a dyslexic thing). Again, I’ve only lost one house key but later found it in my coat inner lining a year on - but I vouched never again.
Fuel up! I have a bad tendency of planning my work day without factoring in a break and will often have to eat driving between bookings. But please fuel up, it ensures you are performing at a high standard and it means you’ll be working more effectively.
Get a work phone. This one has been a GAME CHANGER. I love having loads of photos of pets on my phone but it’s messy and eats into my storage. Similarly, it means you can keep everything all in one place: contacts, messages, content and social media. It also means on your day off and out of hours, you can either turn your phone off or put an out of office on (whatsapp business only).
Keep the routine with a twist. I recommend keeping to the pets’ routine as close as possible, especially on overnight stays, but you can bring in things that you think might benefit them that has worked on other clients e.g. frozen dinner bowls, chew sticks, etc.
I LOVE THIS JOB!!!!
