7 things I’ve learnt as a Business Owner in the First Year

Floofs and friends hit the 1 year milestone in January this year but life’s been pretty hectic that I haven’t had a chance to reflect and review what I’ve learnt as my first year as a business owner.

Before we begin, it’s crazy that this milestone has been hit - I love it! The funny thing with being a business owner is that you never know whether your ideas will work. It’s pretty much a year of trial and error whilst you find your feet but here are 7 things I’ve learnt as a business owner:

  1. Social media is BIG! What I mean by this is that social media can really influence how you shape your business and help with awareness from both side. Social media gives you an insight on what works and what doesn’t work as a business but also helps you connect to those who you might not normally reach.

  2. Work/Life balance is not as glamorous as you think. This first year, you spend a lot of time on your business and time away from your business, you are still think about it. It’s not a 9 - 5 job where you can sign off at the end of the day, it’s pretty much 24/7 (you might even dream about it in your sleep!). Businesses can be all consuming but that’s just part of the journey and all you can hope is that once things fall into place, so will your work/life balance.

  3. Boundaries. As you begin to feel more comfortable in your business and even in your self-worth, you can begin to start expressing boundaries. Think about the jobs / conditions you wouldn’t want to accept and say no to them if the stress isn’t worth the aggro. Think about your personal life and when you wish to switch off from the day.

  4. Coffee shops are your friend. Coffee shops are a great way for a change of scenery to help keep you motivated and to shake up the routine. If you are business owner or even self-employed, you often work by yourself and in the same room at home but as things become stagnate, so does your love for the process. Time to cash in a trip to the coffee shop, you could even organise an admin day with your pals!

  5. Monthly planners are a game changer. I invested into a 18-month planner that has honestly been a life saver, you can work towards goals each month and dedicate specific time in the week to work towards these goals. I’ve scored a high track record of accomplishments using the planner than I did without it. I love it!

  6. Canva is content creator you need. I’m no way supported by Canva but I think it's fantastic. It’s a free platform that helps you create the content you need. Infographics? They got you. Reels? They got you. Website design? They got you. You name it, they’ve got a template for it. psst...I’ve even started planning my content for the month on their calendar templates.

  7. Speak to the professionals. Reach out to those who’s been in the business game for a while, whether it’s a networking event or a free workshop, and lean on them. They can shine on light in areas that you might have forgotten or given you a nudge on something you need to work on but put it on the back burner. I recommend seeking out some free accounting sessions as tax assessments are big and they can help you.

  8. A little bonus tip.. you’ve got this! You know you’re got this, you can do it and just keep on moving. Don’t compare, only admire.
