Should You Crate Train Your Dog?

Yes.

Let’s clear up some things first though before we dive into our reasoning. Crate training should never be used as a punishment for unwanted behaviour or for those that would get particularly triggered by being in a crate e.g separation anxiety or trauma. You need to deal with those traits first before working on the crate training as things can go downhill quite quickly (think long term fear, anxiety and stress).

Now that’s settled, we can go into our reasons why we believe you should crate train your dog:

🔔 creates a safe space for your dog: dogs need to leave from a young area that safe spaces exist and that once they are in that safe space, they can fully relax without being bothered. This encourages you to respect your dog’s boundaries as the motion is visually confirming.

🔔 it is essential that your dog is safe whilst they are in your care when you are driving. Crates offer you and your dog protection when in motion. We also recommend, where possible, do put the crate in the back passenger seats rather than the boot.

🔔 if you feel your dog is becoming over-stimulated, crates are a great way to encourage them to nap and regulate their nervous system again.

🔔 in regards to a professional and wellbeing setting, crates - or similar - are used when your dog is at the vets and so it’s important to get them feeling comfortable so at least that’s one less hurdle to jump over. It also means that if they have surgery and require bed rest, the crate can offer that much needed respite.
